Rede Cidades Criativas UNESCO

Palmela is applying for the Creative Cities Network of UNESCO in the creative field of music. Our aspiration to belong to this Network represents our belief in the transformative possibility that it entails, and in our commitment to design the creative potential of Palmela centered on the people and on its history dating back to several generations.

We look forward to continuous cooperation, sharing experiences, developing projects and contributing to strengthen the worldwide network by sharing the utmost principle of a balanced development future, in which each individual will be valued  by culture understood as a pillar of sustainable development.

The Creative Cities Network of UNESCO (UCCN - UNESCO Creative Cities Network ) was created in 2004 to promote a framework for international cooperation among cities that assume creativity as a strategic factor for their sustainable development.

180 cities are currently part of this network, which aims, as a whole, both at putting creativity and creative industries at the forefront of their local action and development plans, and at actively cooperating internationally.

The network covers seven creative fields: Arts and Crafts, Media Arts, Cinema, Design, Gastronomy, Literature and Music.

By joining this network, cities (or territories) commit themselves to sharing their creative assets and developing partnerships involving both public and private sectors, professional organizations, communities, civil society and cultural institutions, in order to:

  • Strengthen the creation, the production, the distribution and the dissemination of cultural goods, activities and services locally and internationally;
  • Boost hubs of creativity and innovation and broaden opportunities for creators and professionals of the cultural sector;
  • Improve access to and participation in cultural life, particularly of marginalized or vulnerable communities or individuals;
  • Integrate cultural and creative industries into local sustainable development plans.

The Creative Cities Network is a privileged UNESCO partner, not only as a platform for reflection on the role of creativity seen as a lever for sustainable development, but also as a fertile ground for action and innovation, in particular for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Palmela's intention to integrate this network is about emphasizing music and creativity as strategic elements for the sustainable development of the territory. We have no doubt that culture and creative industries are decisive factors that contribute to strengthen the identity of communities and to serve as tools that promote social inclusion, gender equality, environmental awareness, peace and multiculturalism, beyond its proven economic potential. Creativity is an essential lever for the growth of this cosmos which generates art and culture.
